Vivian Hodges, Full Circle of Living and Dying Board Director
Vivian Hodges, living in Grass Valley, CA has been intrigued with the dying process and life after death for most of her life.
After having her own near-death experience, almost drowning while sailing with her father, she realized that we are more than just our body. Years later, one of her sisters was in an accident and was in a coma for a couple weeks. When she came out of the coma, she told the family about her experiences
on “the other side”.
Fifteen years later, she helped her mother in her last two weeks of life. Vivian was so thankful to be able to help her mom during this time and was immensely grateful for the lessons her mother shared. During her bereavement, she learned that few people were willing or able to talk about death. This is when she decided she wanted to learn more about the dying process, encourage discussions on this topic and help those that were in their final days so they weren’t alone at this sacred time.
Vivian learned of hospice and started volunteering at Pathways in Sunnyvale as a respite care volunteer, then trained to be on their vigil team while working full time in the security industry. During one of her
vigil assignments, she learned of reiki and trained with two Reiki masters to earn her level I and level II
reiki certifications. Reiki was often requested during her vigil volunteering. She also helped her husband’s family coordinate hospice care for their mother and was present for her final days.
She took Gerontology courses, searching for a career where she could help others as they transition
from this life but only learned of end-of-life doula work in 2020. She has since attended INELDA’s end of
life doula certification program.
Currently Vivian is volunteering at Hospice of the Foothills as a respite care volunteer, a bereavement table facilitator and soon to attend training for their vigil team. She is also an end-of-life doula volunteer for Full Circle of Living and Dying (FCLD).
Now retired, she’s thankful to have the time to dedicate to service, help others determine what they
want for their end-of-life care plan and to help family/friends implement the care plan, if requested.
Her goal volunteering with FCLD is to help facilitate discussions, activities and creating a desired
environment for people at the end of their life so they can have a ‘good death’. To normalize death so
we all can learn from it and experience this final stage in our physical body in a loving, beautiful way.
She is currently also working with others at FCLD to create informational community events.
