We have a Threshold Choir in Nevada County!
As the last notes of our song faded away, the woman in the bed slowly opened her eyes and gave a faint smile. “Will you sing the one about the angels again?” she asked.
I exchanged glances with my two song-sisters and started softly, “Breathe in Peace, Breathe in Love, Spread your angel wings and fly…”
Sitting low beside her bed, we sang softly for as long as she wished, perhaps twenty minutes. Before we left, we sang for her husband, “Hold this family in your heart, watch over their loved ones…”
She passed ten days later. We were grateful for this opportunity to share in her transition.
We are members of the Yuba Spirit Threshold Singers. We sing simple comforting songs to those at the thresholds of life, creating moments of ease and comfort for clients, family, and caregivers. It may be someone recovering from illness, someone shut in, grieving or simply down-hearted, someone perhaps nearing the end of life.
We sing by invitation in western Nevada County. We sing in private homes and hospitals as well as in eldercare, nursing, and assisted living facilities, and to those in hospice care. We sing about love, peace, and gratitude — themes which fit comfortably within many religious traditions.
In this pandemic era, our hearts ache for those dying without their loved ones beside them — and for their families as well. We wear plastic face shields when we come to sing.
Our voices are our gift. There is never any charge. In this pandemic era especially, we long to sing for you and yours.
